Children seen at the Center receive a comprehensive medical evaluation by a Medical Forensic Examiner. The evaluation helps gather medical and forensic information related to the reported abuse, while also identifying any health needs and providing recommendations to support the child’s care and well-being.
The purpose of the medical evaluation at the Children’s Advocacy Center is to:
Ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of the child
Identify, document, and address any medical conditions or injuries that may result from abuse
Differentiate medical findings that may indicate abuse from those related to other medical conditions or accidental causes
Assess the child for developmental, emotional, or behavioral concerns that may require further evaluation or treatment, and provide referrals when appropriate
Provide reassurance, support, and education to the child and their non-offending caregiver(s)
The Children’s Advocacy Center has specially trained pediatric forensic examiners on-site who specialize in evaluating and caring for children affected by maltreatment. Their expertise allows the Center to provide timely, high-quality medical assessments and compassionate care for children who visit the Center. In addition, the Center contracts with Dr. Dale Woolridge, who is licensed in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, and serves as the program’s Medical Director to provide oversight and expert guidance for medical services.
By offering these services within the Center, families do not have to travel to another location or endure long wait times often associated with emergency departments. Most importantly, children are seen by professionals who are specifically trained in the medical evaluation of child maltreatment, ensuring that care is both specialized and trauma-informed.
